Ascension Island
Ascension Island
Ascension Island is a volcanic island which is also a British overseas territory. It is a very strategic island, and has military bases on it. It had 806 inhabitants as of 2016, and is sadly overrun by invasive species. The capital is Georgetown.
To get in, you need an E-Visa, which needs to be applied for at least 14 days before arrival. It costs 20 pounds for adults and 5 pounds for children 12 and under. You'll have to fly into the only airport, RAF Ascension Island (IATA: ASI). The fastest way is flying from RAF Brize Norton (IATA: BZZ) to there. There are 2 flights a week and 15 seats for civillians. It takes 9-10 hours. There isn't any Wi-Fi on the flights. You also need insurance that can cover a medical emergency. People from some countries also aren't allowed in.
There is only one place to refuel on the island and that is One Boat Fuel Station (also called Birdie's Refuelling Station). You can rent cars there and at JAMS Accomodation. There is almost no public transport (except for a few buses that go on the weekends between bars and settlements), about 40 km of paved roads and they drive on the left side of the road.
Go swim! - There are lots of beutiful beaches!
Heritage Society Museum - A museum showcasing the island's military- and communication history.
St. Mary's Anglican Church - A beautiful church!
Watch sea turtles! - Long beach just outside of Georgetown is the biggest hatching ground!
Green Mountain National Park - Contrary to the islands otherwise rocky and barren landscape there's a giant man-made rainforest. It's invasive and is killing the islands original flora but is still interesting and worth a visit.
Scuba dive! - There's lots of beautiful wildlife to watch!
There is one supermarket on the island. It's called the chandlery, and is the islands main shop. There is a gift shop, called A & P's Gift World, a Duty-Free store at the airport, a gas station called One Boat Fuel Station, and a telecoms shop called Sure South Atlantic Service Centre. There are no ATM's and only one bank, where you can exchange and withdraw money. They use the Saint Helena Pound.
There are 5 places to eat at on the island.
Saints Members Club - Located in Georgetown, you can visit it for simple luches or a beer.
Volcano Club - Located at the US base, it serves things such as burgers, steaks and pizzas. It is the most popular spot for a proper dinner.
Two Boats Club - A restaurant located in Two Boats (the town not literally two boats) which serves things such as cheese toasties and burgers.
NAAFI - The british militray base's snack bar and their bar, 7 South.
The Chandlery - Yep, it's the supermarket from before. It has a deli counter where you can buy things such as sandwiches and pies.
The island's only hotel closed in 2017, along with it's restaurant, gift shop and tourism center, BUT FEAR NOT!!! There are still 2 accomodations left on the island. One in Two Boats, JAMS Accomodation, and one in Georgetown, Heart Held Guest House.
Ascension island has a police station, fire department, and hospital, all located in Georgetown. The emergency number is 999.
Due to there being no submarine cable, many of the islands inhabitants use starlink. From march 2026 the previous internet supplier Sure South Atlantic has stepped down for the Ascension Island Government, who have made their own, Ascension Island Mobile (AIM). It's internet domain is .ac.
Only swim at designated beaches and watch for strong currents. There also might be shark attacks.
