Hahajima
Hahajima
Hahajima is the lesser populated of the two inhabited Ogasawara islands (the other being Chichijima). It is owned by Japan, and has a total population of 440. It has dropped greatly as it was close to 2,000 at some points in the early 1900's. There are abandoned villages on the island, too. It is the southernmost of the Ogasawara islands and the southermost island in all of Japan if not counting Okinawa.
The only way onto Hahajima is with the ferry Hahajima Maru from Chichijima. It takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes, and the ship has luggage compartments, vending machines, plenty of windows etc.
Unlike Chichijima, Hahajima has no public transport. However, there is a car rental called Ogasawara Maintenance Service (小笠原整備サービス) and a gas station called Sato Petrol Store. You can also rent bicycles, but most is reachable by foot. There are also a few private taxi services available, and many accomodations offer to pick you up at the ferry and can sometimes give you rides to some hiking trails.
There are plenty of things to do on Hahajima!
Visit the southermost point of the Tokyo road system - It actually ends on Hahajima! (the road system isn't connected, it's just classified as one with the one in tokyo and on other islands)
Ross Memorial Museum - A small museum built from local Ross stone, showcasing pre-war tools, the island's history of sugar cultivation, and pioneering settlers.
Climb Mount Chibusa! - As opposed to Chichijima's Mount Chuo, which is 319 meters tall, Hahajima has Mount Chibusa, which is way taller, at 462 meters.
Take a swim and/or snorkel! - Hahajima has lots of nice beaches, some of which are even spawning grounds for green sea turtles!
Samegasaki Observation Deck - A fantastic spot for whale watching and ocean sunsets near the port!
Stargazing! - With virtually no light pollution, Hahajima is a perfect place to watch the stars!
Visit Kofuji! - A little hill which due to it's cone shape, is called little fuji!
Take a nice walk in the village - It's really nice!

Despite their remote location, the islands (Chichijima and Hahajima) have good internet. This is due to a submarine cable being laid in march 2011 and opening in july 2011. However, coverage may be bad or not exist at all outside the main town.
Always stay on trails and take your trash with you as there are limited disposal facilities. You should also carry and use sunscreen. Make sure that you aren't bringing in any inavsive species to the island as well.
