Chichijima
Chichijima
There is no airport on the island, so there is only one way onto the island. That way is a 24-25,5 hour ferry from Tokyo, called the Ogasawara Maru. It is operated by the company Ogasawara Kaiun. The ferry has a restaurant, a lounge, a small shop, showers etc. They will check you thoroughly before you board, as they want to keep invasive species out.
A bus around Chichijima operates several times daily, and you can rent cars and mopeds as well, as there are plenty of car rentals (4!). There are two gas stations, Cosmo Oil and Showa shell. An important thing to remember is that they are both closed on sundays.
There are plenty of things to do on Chichijima!
Sakaiura bay - A beautiful bay home to the partially submerged wreck of the Hinko-Maru.
Heart rock (Chihiroiwa) - A red cliff shaped like a heart!
Mt. Chuo Lookout - A 360 degree viewpoint on the highest oint on the island (319 Meters)!
Ogasawara Marine Center - A marine center where you can see green sea turtles and even participate in their release in summer months!
Ogasawara Fisheries Center - An aquarium where you can see plenty of things!
Asahiyama Lookout - A lookout overlooking the entire town!
Stargazing - Due to zero light pollution, it is perfect for stargazing!
Take a swim - This is pretty self explanatory
Ogasawara World Heritage Center - Kind of a mixture between a museum and a research lab. Basically the control center for the UNESCO Heritage Site that is the islands.
Ogi Ike - A lagoon leading out to the sea via a stone arch. It is on a nearby uninhabited island called Minamijima, however entry is very restricted.
Visit one of many WWII ruins - Yes, sadly the war was on the island too. A horrific incident called the Chichijima incident ocurred involving guards eating executed american pilots. The only one to escape was actually americas future president, George H. W. Bush.
*Note: I didnt rank these in any way, i just put them in a random order
There are 3 supermarkets on the island.
Chichijima Store
BITC Ogasawara Co-op
Koiwai Grocery
There are also plenty of vending machines on the island.
There are also some souvenir stores:
Heart Rock Gift Shop
Maruhi
B-ship (Ogasawara Village Tourist Association)
There are plenty of opportunities to exchange cash, including the post office and ATM's. Most of these accept major international networks such as Visa or Mastercard.
There are plenty of restaurants and bars. Almost too many to count. There are no places outside the town to buy water at, so bring lots.
There are way too many hotels and accomodations to count too. Probably around 30+.
The village has a police station, a clinic, and firetrucks along with fire equipment, volunteers and a shack.
The emergency numbers are:
Police: 110
Fires and Ambulance: 119
Coast guards: 118
During Tsunamis, sirens and alerts will play. Get as high up as possible as soon as possible. Dont wait to see the wave.
Despite their remote location, the islands have good internet. This is due to a submarine cable being laid in march 2011 and opening in july 2011. However, coverage may be bad or not exist at all outside the main town.
You are not allowed to camp outside the town. Youre not allowed to hike outside marked trails either, and you're expected to bring your trash with you back to your hotel or the port. You should also use and carry sunscreen.
