Qaanaaq (Thule)
Qaanaaq (Thule)
Qaanaaq, also called Thule, is a town of 646 people in Northwestern Greenland. The town is the only in the entirety of Greenland with a street grid, because the town was artificially established. In 1952 and 1953, inhabitants in the village Pituffik were forcibly relocated to Qaanaaq due to an airbase, Thule Air Base, being built there. People had to live in tents there until november 1953, while 27 new houses were constructed for them. Due to the town boasting great infrastructure compared to neighboring villages, people have been moving out of them at alarming rates, some having been drained of inhabitants entirely. The town is also the furthest north in the world with more than 100 inhabitants except for those on Svalbard. It is 77°28 N, AKA 1,350 kilometers to the north pole!

There is only one store in the entire village. It's called Pilersuisoq, and it sells everything you might need. Food, furniture, appliances, clothes, things for your house, hunting gear, toys, etc. It's state owned, and the supplies only come twice a year, at the beginning of the summer and at the end of it. That makes so it has a 3 month and a 9 MONTH INTERVAL! That's crazy! You might also be able to find people selling souvenirs privately. They use the Danish Krone, but there's no place to withdraw it from. Except for that they do have small bank in the Pilersuisoq post office that you can withdraw from, but you DEFINETLY shouldn't rely on that.
There are no restaurants or bars in Qaanaaq. None. So the only place to eat at is Hotel Qaanaaq, the town's only hotel.

Qaanaaq does not have a submarine cable running to it. It relies on satelite, which makes the internet slow. It does not yet have 5G but 4G is provided by Tussass.
The town actually has more huskies than people. They're THE last place to hunt narwhals with handmade kayaks and harpoons! Motorboats are also forbidden!
