Mangareva
Mangareva
Mangareva is one of the most remote inhabited places in all of French Polynesia. It consists of a few towns, the largest of which Rikitea. The island has a total of 1,239 inhabitants as of 2012. The island is surrounded by thin coral reefs and som slim islands.
The only way into Mangareva is by plane into the Totegegie Airport (IATA: GMR) from Tahiti. The flights go 1 or 2 times a week. The airport is on a slim coral island, so you'll have to take a boat from the airport to the island, which will take 40 minutes.
There are no rental cars, so you'll have to get around by foot, and everything in Rikitea can be easily reached that way. There is a 27km (16 mile) paved road that goes around most of the island, which takes 4-6 hours to circle. They drive on the right side of the road.
Visit Mont Duff - The highest peak on the island (411 meters)
Visit Mont Mokoko - (423 meters)
Cathédrale Saint-Michel - A cathedral built completely from coral in the 1830's. It's altar is built from pearl.
Go snorkling! - There are lots of beautiful water, fish and coral!
*Note: I didnt rank these in any way, i just put them in a random order
There's one proper grocery store on Mangareva, Grocery Store TEREHERE. There are also a few smaller shops, including Magasin Keali and Magasin Jojo. There is also a souvenir shop called Black Pearl Mangareva. They use the CFP franc. Local craftsmen sell crafts such as hats woven with pandanus leaves or seashell necklaces. There are no ATMs on the island so you'll have to bring your own cash.
The only real place except for hotels to eat at in Mangareva is Snack Jojo. It is one with Magasin Jojo mentioned earlier. It serves things such as Steak frites, chow men, poisson cru and chicken and fries. It has good reviews.
Pension Maro'i
Pension Bianca & Benoit
Pension Chez Jojo
*Note, these are not ranked in any way and these are only some of them.
There is a medical center and police station on the island, but no fire station. The emergency numbers are 17 for police, 15 for ambulance and 18 for firefighters (which goes directly to the local government who sends out volunteers with equipment).
The internet connection is very unstable. You might sometimes be without it.
There is no nightlife. It's more of a peaceful place. Bring a good flashlight and mosquito repellant. There are almost no streetlights and the local nono-flies are really pesky and bite at the beaches.
