Tristan da Cunha
Tristan da Cunha
Yeah, no, im never going here. Why? Read why at the Get in section AFTER you've finished reading this. Basically, Tristan da Cunha is a British Overseas Territory. It is basically the final boss of this website (i don't mean that it is the last of course) as it is THE MOST REMOTE INHABITED PLACE ON EARTH. The people there are descendants from british settlers and even have their own special accent developed just 200 years ago! It has 265 inhabitants as of 2016. A volcanic eruption in 1961 which stopped just a few tens meters outside the town (Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. You still can see the remenants of the lava today as a large surface is covered in black rock) forced the inhabitants to evacuate to London for 2 years, first returning in 1963, with oral problems due to them eating sugar in the United Kingdom, which basically didn't exist on Tristan da Cuhna back then, which made them have almost perfect teeth. The isalnd is also an active volcano hence the eruption in 1961.
The remnants of the eruption (Lava Field) is circled
Now THIS is why i'm never going there. Getting in is a fucking nightmare timewise. There is no airport, so it can only be reached by boat which will take 5-10 fucking DAYS to just get there (from Cape Town). You can either sail there yourself, catch a fishing boat (which just has room for 12 passengers), catch the South African research ship called SA Agulhas II which has room for 40 passengers, or go on a cruise. You must request permission from the island council via E-Mail. You might get thrown off the ship (not literally) if someone who has a higher priority than you needs to get onboard (like a medical evacuation for example), and even if you reach the island it's not guaranteed you can visit it. If the waves are too high your boat might have to wait offshore for several days or maybe have to skip the visit all together. You also must have insurance that covers medical evacuations to Cape Town.
There are no car or veichle rentals, so you'll just have to walk. The town is also small enough for it. However there are potato patches 3 miles away (4,8 kilometers), where a bus goes in the morning, so there is public transport. You must be accompanied by a guide if you wish to walk outside the main settlement.
Climb the volcano! - Either the First Base (the plateau over the town) or the summit (Queen Mary's Peak).
Visit the fish factory! - Tours are often available to visitors.
Thatched house museum - A museum built by local pensioneers in 2012 in traditional ways with for example the walls being made out of volcanic rock!
The Potato Patches - The ones mentioned before. They are owned privately, so you cant actually visit them, but you can watch them.
Visit the lava field! As seen in one of the pictures above, there is a lot of hardened lava! You can go visit it!
*Note: I didn't rank these in any way
There is one supermarket, which goes by just supermarket, and 3 souvenir stores:
The post office and tourism center - Here there is a souvenir shop
Rockhopper Gift Shop - Specializes in Tristan themed clothing
Handicrafts Shop - Also located at the tourism center
They use the British pound and there are no ATM's. There is a treasury where you can exchange Euros US Dollars and South African Rand to British Pounds, but you cant withdraw cash in any way on the island. However, card payment machines were installed as a test at the post office and tourism center in november 2025. So make sure to bring your own cash. Don't buy too much from the supermarket, as it is needed by the inhabitants.
There are two places to eat and drink at on Tristan da Cunha.
Albatross Bar - The world's most remote pub!
Café da Cuhna - A small café located inside the post office.
There are three types of accomodations on Tristan da Cunha.
Homestays - You live with a local family and share meals with them.
Guest houses - There are 6 of them here.
Thatched house museum - Remember that museum from earlier? Yeah, you can sleep in it. It costs 100 pounds for two people.
Tristan da Cunha has a police station, hospital, and fire depot, with a volunteer crew, and a modified Land Rover Defender with firefighting equipment and a small ladder. It also has an ambulance and police car, also modified Land Rover Defenders. The emergency numbers are:
Fires: 999
Ambulance: 5000
Police: 5111
They use Starlink since september 2024, so now they have speeds of 290 Mbps, a massive leap from the pervious 10 Mbps. They also got 4G coverage and public Wi-Fi. They also have an internet café, where entry costs 10 pounds.
You cannot bring foreign plants or animals there because of the islands unique ecosystem. You should also bring good shoes and layered clothes as the weather changes rapidly.
